Songs rarely arrive fully formed. Some begin with a memory, some with a conversation, and some with a melody that refuses to leave me alone. These are a few notes on what set each one in motion.

I pictured the road first: headlights cutting through the dark, the engine holding a steady note and nowhere obvious to stop. I Can Run This Heart grew from that scene. The whole recording keeps moving, even when the night seems endless.

Paper Moon began with the electricity of meeting someone who changes the temperature of the room. I wanted the music to hold both sides of that first evening: the excitement of being there and the strange sadness of already knowing it cannot remain untouched forever.

Kid came from noticing how quickly music can return you to an earlier self. A record starts and the years between seem to disappear. The song is not really asking to be young again; it is grateful for the person who can still bring that younger self into the room.

Christina Rotando brings the second voice to Close Enough. The two characters know better than to promise a future they cannot see, but they refuse to cheapen the present either. Their restraint is what makes the connection feel believable.

My daughter Natalie, who records as Snoopy Starr, sings Different Versions with me. We can look back at the same family years and carry different memories of them. The song is our way of putting both accounts beside each other without forcing either one to surrender.

Pinball Heart arrived with flashing lights and the clatter of an arcade machine. Love becomes a game you swear you are finished with, right up until you find another coin. The playful sound hides someone who knows the machine is winning and presses start anyway.

1988 is not a history lesson. It is vinyl scattered across the floor, the radio turned up and a drive with no useful destination. I wanted the synths to open a small door back to those unmeasured hours when being young was enough of a plan.

Featuring Meeting of the Mimes
Held by You was co-written with Alex O’Brien, who performs and releases music as Meeting of the Mimes. An old guitar gave us the viewpoint: worn wood quietly accounting for years of use, travel and change. Halfway through, the meaning turned. The guitar was not the only thing that had been carried.

Miles & Memories is about friendship across years, distance and changing lives. Genki Haraguchi joins me in English and Japanese, with New York and Tokyo giving the song its wider horizon. The miles are real, but shared memories keep people close.

Waiting on Faith comes from prayers that seem to meet silence. I did not want to manufacture a sudden answer for the final chorus. The change is quieter: looking back and recognising that God was present in the waiting, even when I could not feel Him there.

Lerouxne Burden, who performs as Piano Girl, joins me on East from West. She brings another life and another testimony into the song. We did not want to make either past smaller for the sake of a tidy ending. The two voices meet because grace has room for both of them.
